To buy or not to buy just yet

So my Mac is dead, thus I need a new computer. I could get a new hard drive as a short term fix, then buy a new computer when the new iLife and Leopard comes out. I am just not sure about what to do.
The reason I decided to buy a new computer is that the Mac Genius (or ungenius) told me that it might be more than the hard drive.
In order to be up and running good, my computer needs a new battery and a new hard drive which is why I deduced that spending the money for a new machine would be a better deal considering the Mac is three years old (which is ancient in tech years).
Then do I want to buy a new computer now when in a few months they are going to unveil a new operating system and iLife.
So this is not the worst of predicaments, but something I am pondering.
Any advice would be appreciated.
